In times when any interior contains a sense of unobtrusive and elegant Scandinavian design, IKEA has positioned itself as the ideal place to stimulate creative ideas. It is a style that has overgrown the actual design and become a lifestyle accepted with enthusiasm in Belgrade, where IKEA has built its first store covering an area of more than 30,000 square meters.
How we overcame to challenge
Due to the proximity of the Danube and Sava Rivers, the terrain in Belgrade is mostly alluvial with a poor load bearing capacity. Consequently, the foundations at IKEA were carried out as drilled pylons reaching the depth of the load bearing soil onto which the foundations slabs were constructed. Upon analysing all identified parameters, interventions were made on the original architectural project which prescribed incorporation of PVC folios on all of the essential layers: lean concrete, two layers of geotextile and protective concrete as well as incorporation of the waterstop strip for the formation of fields. The DRACO technical office offers a different solution using DRACO BENT 500 bentonite waterproofing and the application of which is immeasurably simpler, without the need for substrate or protective layers. DRACO BENT 500 is a membrane incorporate bentonite granules between two thickly woven geotextiles.
When the granules come into contact with water, they swell up and pressed in between the structure, create a liquid, steam and gaseous impermeable gel, and it is this ability which makes the material the only active membrane. The bentonite membrane was used for waterproofing the floor slabs where they were placed directly on a well rolled and compacted substrate, with all the pylon penetrations protected using the DRACO BENT 110 bentonite covering, and all concrete edges sealed using the DRACO WATERSTOP 500 strip. Completion of waterproofing at top ground level was carried out by overlapping with the polymer cement coating DRACO LASTIC 100, providing a comprehensive waterproofing system. Besides this reduction of layers, the incorporation of the DRACO BENT 500 membrane led to quickening the pace of works given that the technology does not depend on weather conditions.
