At Svilno, the entrance to Rijeka, an imposing facility owned by the pharmaceutical company Jadran galenski laboratorij is located. This space-age, industrial facility, with an interesting architectural form, was a challenge for all fields of the construction professions, and an especially interesting story occurred when designing the waterproofing systems.
How we overcame the challenge
Though the company’s innovation rests on the use of sea water, conscious of the harmfulness of underground and stormwater, they submitted demanding requirements for waterproofing into the hands of the DRACO professionals. The section of structure situated in the ground was built directly on the DRACO BENT bentonite membrane, the only active membrane, which is pressed between the structure and the ground, and in contact with water creates a dense gel impermeable to water, vapor and gases. Due to the deep foundations, the external and above-foundation walls were waterproofed using the DRACO LASTIC 150 polymer cement coating with a high elasticity which behaves well during construction work. By combining the DRACO BENT and DRACO LASTIC systems in this manner, a cost-effective, function and complete waterproofing system was achieved. Besides the structure located in the ground, the DRACO team also undertook the waterproofing of the level roofs for which the TPO membrane from the DRACO PLAN system was used. It involves a waterproofing roof membrane which is exceptionally physically resistant, energy efficient and UV stable. The design engineers decided to use gravel for the final layer of the roof and which was constructed over a permeable layer of geotextile on a PE dimple membrane. This waterproofing system fully meets the specific and sterile conditions which are prevalent in the pharmaceutical industry.
